Thesis title: Cultural Globalisation and Citizenship: National Museums in Multicultural Societies
Mia's research is examining the changing role of public institutions, namely national museums, in multicultural societies. Many public institutions are much more attune to the needs and expectations of minority cultures. Yet many questions still remain in relation to how minority cultures might be fully involved in the life of public institutions. The research asks how are national museums fostering more inclusive experiences of citizenship in multicultural societies, particularly through their use of digital media. The research is based on a multi-site case study of the National Museum of Australia, National Museum of Singapore, and Museum of London. The research aims to contribute to the ongoing, lasting inclusion of minority cultures in multicultural societies.
